Where: Old Delhi, Jama Masjid
When: The muslim day of Eid, October
My first sightseeing day in Delhi after almost a month in Gurgaon was very vivid. It was the day of Eid, a muslim holiday, and I was expecting that a lot would be going on in the muslim area of Delhi. As I tried finding my way to India’s largest mosque, called Jama Masjid, I clearly saw that my presumption was correct. The street was bustling and I soon realized that I was in for another colorful experience.
Walking down the streets kids were ever so often greeting me and insistently shaking my hand. The street was lined by cycle rickshaws, beggars, sellers, and people proceeding to the mosque. As I was crossing one of these busy streets I barely noticed an elephant right in front of me! I nearly bumped into it! It turned out to be a form of creative advertising as they used it as a billboard.
When I reached the mosque ten minutes later I had laid eyes on eagles, lamb butchers, goats, cows, and even sheep. Jama Masjid is an impressive structure and today it was busy with muslim visitors. A view from the minaret gave a good view of old Delhi and my upcoming route. |

This is when I decided to take a cycle rickshaw for a short tour through some of the streets of Delhi. I had gotten a driver who was a bit too smart in the traffic. When there was a close encounter with another cycle rickshaw the passenger from the other rickshaw found it suitable to stand and slap my driver hard across his face! My driver simply shouted and continued on ahead.
The day continued with many other impressions along the narrow streets of old Delhi at the end of it all it I was highly satisfied with my neighborhood in South Delhi. |
