Living in New Delhi

People say that you will either hate or love India, which is not quite true. I am a perfect example of that, I like it, but I don?t love it and certainly don?t hate it.

Nevertheless, for people who have never visited a developing country before, India can be quite a shock. Even for well traveled people India can be a shock on the senses, but in both positive and negative ways. There is logic that can not quite be understood by westerners or things that are so much easier than back home.

Life in Delhi really depends on what you make of it, as everything else does. Delhi can easily be a very social experience as well as a very lonely experience. If you are young and alone when you come to Delhi living with other people really helps, you are immediately making friends and do not feel completely alone in this new world. Among the younger crowd there are often social gatherings or parties which are ideal to meet new people who are in the same the situation.

If you are a working expat, then despite how different everything can seem at first, things fall into a routine, and you sort of get used to how things are.

Living in Delhi with a standard western salary allows you to afford many luxuries. This can easily include a maid, driver, and a cook. This makes life a whole lot easier and there are suddenly a lot of things you do not have to worry about. Having someone who knows how to get around to get things done in Delhi can really be an asset. Just wait till you have to get a gas cylinder for your stove on your own J. So all in all, life can be really comfortable.

There is also the possibility of very interesting weekend trips to intriguing destinations. They can be tiring, but at the same time they are very inspirational and fun. Check out our travel section and get the travel bug J.

There are many that look negatively upon their stay in Delhi, but I would say that most people like it and end up enjoying it. So be excited about moving to Delhi, but don?t expect New York City.
